NRI and Overseas Families: Admission Checklist for a CBSE Boarding School in Maharashtra

Short answer: Children coming from abroad can join a CBSE boarding school in India. Start with the school's document list, check whether your child's current board appears on CBSE's equivalence list, appoint a trusted local guardian, plan the journey from Mumbai or Pune, and visit the campus before you commit.

Choosing a boarding school from another time zone is hard. You cannot drop in on a Saturday, you may be juggling a relocation, and every document seems to need a stamp. This checklist sets out what CBSE's own rules say, what schools usually ask for, and what to settle before your child flies in. It is written by Shivneri School & Junior College, a CBSE co-educational boarding school (Affiliation No. 1130133) in Khanapur, Tal. Junnar, Dist. Pune, Maharashtra, but the questions apply to any school you are considering.

Can NRI and overseas children join a CBSE boarding school in India?

Yes. Shivneri admits Indian residents, NRIs and foreign nationals with a valid student visa, as set out on our Parent FAQs page. Children of foreign nationals need the right visa before admission can proceed; check the current requirement with the Indian mission in your country of residence.

Does my child need CBSE approval to transfer from a foreign board?

Usually not, if the board is on CBSE's list. In November 2021, CBSE told its schools that students coming from foreign boards could be admitted to Classes 9 to 12 without prior Board approval, provided the board appears on the equivalence list in the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws (Careers360 report). If your child's board is not on that list, CBSE's admission rules say an eligibility certificate must first be obtained from the Board, which issues it only after confirming the course studied is equivalent to the corresponding CBSE class (CBSE admission rules).

Two practical points:

Which documents should we keep ready?

Start with the list on our Parent FAQs page:

  1. Child's birth certificate (original or attested copy)
  2. Academic reports for the last two years
  3. Four passport-size photographs of the child and four of the parents
  4. Aadhaar cards of the child and parents
  5. Transfer Certificate from the previous school (from Class 2 onward)
  6. Confidential medical record
  7. Caste certificate, where applicable

For families coming from abroad, also keep ready:

  1. Passport copies of the child and both parents
  2. OCI card or the child's visa, as applicable
  3. The previous school's report cards and leaving certificate in English
  4. Proof that your child's board appears on CBSE's equivalence list, or the CBSE eligibility certificate if it does not

If your child or either parent does not hold one of these documents, for example an Aadhaar card, or holds documents issued abroad, tell us when you book your visit and we will tell you what applies.

Scan everything into one folder before you start. Overseas courier delays are the most common reason admissions stall.

Who will be our child's local guardian?

Most families living abroad name a local guardian in India: a relative or trusted family friend who can reach the campus quickly, attend to a medical decision if you cannot be reached, and host your child on approved leave. Choose someone your child knows and is comfortable with, and make sure they have the time.

At Shivneri, a boarder may leave campus only with prior written consent from a parent or guardian, under the school's leave procedure, and the school may verify the identity of anyone who comes to collect a boarder.

How do we reach the campus from Mumbai or Pune?

Shivneri is on the Narayangaon-Junnar Road in Tal. Junnar, Dist. Pune, about 75 km from Pune and about 150 km from Mumbai. International flights land at both cities.

For a first visit, allow a full day on the ground. Avoid planning a same-day international departure after a campus visit.

How do we plan a campus visit from overseas?

Plan the visit around a trip home if you can. Book a date and time slot on our admissions page; the school confirms by phone or WhatsApp, usually the same day. Bring your child: how they feel walking the hostel matters as much as anything a brochure says.

How will we stay in touch during term?

Distance makes communication the question overseas parents ask most. Once admission is confirmed, parents receive a School App login and an ID card for campus visits, and the school shares updates through the app. For anything urgent, the school office can be reached on +91 8208432877, +91 7559215292 or 02132-295005.

Ask us about call timings for boarders when you visit.
