Can a student prepare for CBSE boards and JEE or NEET at the same time?

Yes, and most students do. The CBSE Class 11 and 12 Science syllabus covers the core concepts tested in JEE Main (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) and NEET (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). The difference is depth and speed: entrance exams test problem solving under time pressure, while board exams also reward clear written answers and practical work.

The practical rule is simple. Learn a chapter for the board first, then practise entrance-level problems on the same chapter that week. Students who treat boards and entrances as two separate syllabuses usually end up doing neither well. Students who build one plan for both tend to stay calmer in Class 12.

What are the key exam dates for the 2027 cycle?

On 16 September 2026, the National Testing Agency (NTA) published its examination calendar up to March 2027 (notice on nta.ac.in). As reported from that calendar, JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is proposed for 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027, with 31 January as a buffer date (ThePrint). Dates for JEE Main Session 2 and for NEET UG 2027 had not been announced in that calendar.

What this means for a Class 12 student this year:

• January: JEE Main Session 1, while board preparation and pre-boards are also running.
• Board season: CBSE publishes the Class 12 date sheet on cbse.gov.in. Put it on the same wall calendar as the entrance dates as soon as it is out.
• After boards: NEET UG and the second JEE Main session, on dates NTA will announce.

Always check the official sites, jeemain.nta.nic.in and neet.nta.nic.in, before booking travel or planning revision. Schedules can change: in 2026, NTA cancelled the NEET UG exam held on 3 May and conducted a re-examination on 21 June (ETV Bharat). A student who has been revising steadily handles that kind of change far better than one who has been cramming to a single date.

Do Class 12 board marks still matter for JEE and NEET?

Yes. Board marks are not just a formality.

• For engineering: to take admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes through JoSAA counselling, students generally need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC and ST candidates) or a place in the top 20 percentile of their board. This applies at admission, not for sitting JEE Main itself. Confirm the exact rule in the JEE Main 2027 information bulletin.
• For medicine: NEET UG candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English in Class 12, with a minimum aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (reported as 50% for General and EWS, 40% for OBC, SC and ST, and 45% for PwBD candidates in 2026), and be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year. The CBSE scheme of two board exams a year was approved for Class 10 from 2026 only. For Class 12, plan for one main board exam.

What do JEE Main and NEET actually test?

NEET UG has 180 questions for 720 marks: 45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry and 90 in Biology. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1 mark (ETV Bharat, on the 2026 pattern). Biology is half the paper, so NCERT Biology mastery matters enormously.

JEE Main Paper 1 (for BE and BTech) is a computer-based test in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with multiple-choice and numerical-answer questions and negative marking. Check the current pattern in the official bulletin before the session, because NTA has adjusted section formats in recent years.

Both exams reward the same habit: timed practice, error analysis, and returning to weak chapters every week.

Where does boarding help, and where can it hurt?

Where boarding helps:

• No commute. Time that day scholars spend travelling to school and coaching becomes study, sleep or exercise time.
• A fixed routine. Supervised study hours remove the daily negotiation about phones and television.
• Teachers nearby. Doubts can be cleared the same evening rather than piling up.
• A peer group with the same goal. Studying alongside classmates preparing for the same exams normalises hard work.

Where boarding can hurt, if a school gets it wrong:
