Changing school in Class 10, 11 or 12: what the CBSE rules say

Updated 23 October 2026. Sources: official CBSE pages and circulars, linked in each section.

Under CBSE rules, a student cannot join Class X or Class XII directly. A school change in Class X or XII is allowed only in transfer cases, such as a parent's job transfer or the family shifting home, with Board approval. The cleanest entry points are the start of Class IX and the start of Class XI.

Can you change school in Class 10 under CBSE?

Only in limited cases. CBSE does not allow direct admission to Class X; a student joins Class X in a new school only when the parents are transferred or the family shifts residence, and the school then gets post facto Board approval.

CBSE treats the Secondary stage as a two-year integrated course, so Class IX and X are one unit. When a transfer case is accepted, the new school collects the Class IX mark sheet and a countersigned Transfer Certificate, and forwards the case to the CBSE Regional Office within one month of admission.

Can you change school in Class 11?

Yes. Class XI is a fresh entry point: any student who has passed Class X from CBSE or an equivalent recognised board can be admitted, subject to the school's own seats and stream rules.

Timing matters. CBSE says no student may be admitted in Class IX or above after 31 August without prior permission from the Chairman, CBSE, unless the student applied within a fortnight of a late result. Schools must also register every Class XI student with CBSE by the Board's last date, so joining early in the session is simplest.

Can you change school in Class 12 under CBSE?

Only in transfer cases. CBSE says no admission shall be taken in Class XII directly; the student must have completed regular Class XI study and passed Class XI from a CBSE school, and a move is accepted on a parent's transfer or the family shifting home.

As with Class X, the new school obtains post facto approval from the Board within one month, with the mark sheet and countersigned Transfer Certificate. CBSE also states that a student shall not migrate from one school to another during the session, except where the Chairman relaxes this in special circumstances.

What counts as a valid transfer case?

CBSE names two grounds: the transfer of the parent(s), or the family shifting from one place to another. A wish to change school for academic or personal preference is not listed as a ground.

For parent-transfer cases, CBSE's FAQ says admission can be made at any time, and no separate permission is needed if the section stays within 40 students and the admission is before the Class IX / XI registration last date. Otherwise, the school seeks Board approval. Keep the transfer order or proof of the new address ready.

Why do CBSE registration and LOC data matter?

Because they decide who can sit the Board exam. Every Class IX and XI student must be registered with CBSE by the school, and that registration feeds the List of Candidates (LOC) for Class X and XII.

CBSE told schools in October 2024 to register 100% of Class IX and XI students, and said the Board itself will not register any student from the next LOC cycle. If a student joins after the registration last date, the school must report it to the Regional Office within seven days. A late or unplanned move can leave a student's data in the wrong school.

How does the 75% attendance rule affect a school change?

A student needs at least 75% attendance to be eligible for the Board exam, and a school change does not suspend that rule. CBSE allows up to 25% relaxation only for serious reasons such as a medical emergency, national or international sport, or the loss of a parent, with documents.

CBSE's circular of 4 August 2025 cites Rules 13 and 14 of the Examination Bye-Laws and asks schools for strict compliance. A gap between schools can cost attendance days, so plan the move date carefully.

Do you need a migration certificate or a Transfer Certificate?

For a school change within school years, you need the Transfer Certificate (TC) from the last school. The CBSE migration certificate is issued after the Class X or XII result and is used when moving on, for example from Class X to Class XI in another school or board.

CBSE says a student leaving on migration or at the parents' request receives an authenticated, up-to-date TC once dues are paid; TCs from some schools need countersignature. CBSE's DigiLocker guide says the digital mark sheet cum certificate and migration certificate appear in the "Issued documents" section after results.

What this means if you are thinking of boarding

The safest times to move a child into a boarding school are the start of Class IX and the start of Class XI. Moving in Class X or XII mid-cycle is limited by CBSE rules to genuine transfer cases.

Shivneri School and Junior College is a CBSE boarding school on a 13-acre campus at Khanapur, Tal. Junnar, Dist. Pune, with boarding from Class I to XII and a Junior College for Class XI and XII. If you are deciding now, plan for a Class IX entry (a full two-year run to Class X) or a Class XI entry (a full two-year run to Class XII). If your family is relocating and you need a Class X or XII move, talk to our admissions team early so the documents and Board approval are handled correctly.

What is the difference between a TC and a migration certificate?

The Transfer Certificate is issued by the school a student leaves. The CBSE migration certificate is issued after the Class X or XII result and appears in DigiLocker.
