Boarding school or day school: which is right for your child?

By Shivneri School ยท 18 October 2026

Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a family makes, and the choice between boarding and day school sits right at the centre of it. Some parents arrive certain that boarding is the answer. Others cannot imagine their child sleeping anywhere but home. Most are somewhere in between. This guide does not try to sell you either option. It sets out how the two differ in daily life, how to tell whether your child is ready, and what to ask before you decide.

What is the real difference between boarding and day school?

In a day school, the school day ends when the bell rings and your child comes home. Homework, meals, sleep and weekends are managed by the family. In a boarding school, the school is responsible for the whole day: classes, study hours, meals, sport, rest and lights-out. Parents stay closely involved, but the daily routine is run by teachers and wardens.

Neither model is better in itself. The right choice depends on your child's age, temperament and needs, and on what your family's days actually look like.

How do you know if your child is ready for boarding?

Readiness is less about age and more about a few signs you can watch for at home:

If several of these are missing, that does not rule boarding out. It may simply mean waiting a year, or starting with a longer conversation and a campus visit together.

What does a day school do well?

A day school keeps your child at home every evening. You see their mood, help with homework and share meals together. For younger children, or for a child who needs close daily support from family, that closeness matters a great deal. Day schooling also lets a child stay rooted in neighbourhood friendships and family routines.

The trade-off is time and energy. Long commutes, tuition classes in different parts of the city and busy working parents can leave a child's evening fragmented and tiring.

What does a boarding school do well?

Boarding gives a child a single, steady routine. There is no daily commute, study hours are built into the evening, and sport and activities happen on the same campus. Children learn to organise their own things, solve small problems on their own and live alongside classmates from different backgrounds. Many parents also find that weekends together become calmer and more enjoyable once homework battles move off the kitchen table.

The trade-off is distance. You will miss some everyday moments, and the first weeks can be hard for both child and parent. A good school helps with that through regular contact and close pastoral care.

What does each option really cost a family?

Compare the full picture, not only the school fee. For a day school, add transport, tuition, meals and the hours a parent spends driving. For a boarding school, the annual fee usually covers much more of the day, but check exactly what is included and what is charged separately. At Shivneri, ask us about fees for your child's class and we will walk you through it.

What should you look for on a campus visit?

Which model does Shivneri run?

Shivneri School & Junior College is an English-medium, co-educational CBSE residential (boarding) school (Affiliation No. 1130133), run by Shivneri Foundation, a public trust. Pre-primary (Play Group to Sr KG) runs as day classes; boarding runs from Class I to Class XII; and our Junior College (Class XI-XII) offers Science and Commerce.

Boarders live in separate hostels for boys and girls, with dorm wardens and weekly counsellor visits, and the campus has a 24/7 in-house infirmary with nurses. Shivneri Foundation was established in 2004 and the school opened in 2005. Since then, 5,000+ students have been educated here, with 100% Class X results, all 16 batches, and 600+ inter-school trophies. The 13-acre campus is about 75 km from Pune and 150 km from Mumbai.

The clearest way to decide is to visit with your child, see the classrooms and hostels, and ask every question on your list.
